Faculty and students at Msalato are in need of regular health care, both preventative and curative. At present there is no provision for health care for students and faculty at Msalato Theological College.
Friends of Msalato International is dedicated to raising and providing funds to ensure that all faculty and students have access to basic medical, dental, and eye care.
Medicine
There are many tropical diseases in East African, and in Tanzania that are of concern.
The two diseases of greatest concern are malaria and cholera. Malaria is a disease spread by mosquitoes, and cholera is a water born disease. Protection against malaria is usually a mosquito net. Medicine is the best option.
Most students do not have money to buy filtered water or malaria tablets (as a preventative measure).
Consequently, most, if not all students and staff have a low grade infection of malaria, which means students and teachers alike are simply not able to study and teach at their optimal levels.
In addition, diabetes is also prevalent among students and faculty. Funds are need to test incoming students and faculty for diabetes, and provide medicene, test strips, testing devices, and insulin.
We need money to buy medicines for students and staff to help them be as productive in their ministry as possible.
Dental Care
Our major objective is to ensure that all faculty
and students have annual dental checkups and access to emergency
dental treatment, as needed. This would include fillings,
extractions, crowns, root canals, and other basic services.
In Tanzania, the cost of a crown or a root canal is
US $30. However, the average monthly income of a parish priest
in Dodoma is US $6.00, and seminary students lack income entirely.
Eye Care
The principal goal is to provide all students and faculty with annual eye exams and cover the cost of lenses and frames as required. In addition, medical treatment and drugs to treat infection is critical for students and faculty because of the prevalence of eye infections related to tropical diseases
